Example type เป็นชนิดของสิ่งชี้แนะที่ผู้เขียนชี้แนะความหมายของคำศัพท์ไม่คุ้นเคยด้วยการให้หรือยกตัวอย่าง
ขึ้นมาประกอบความหมาย ของคำศัพท์ที่ไม่คุ้นเคยนั้น โดยปกติก่อนจะยกตัวอย่างขึ้นมาประกอบเพื่อชี้แสดงความหมายของศัพท์
ไม่คุ้นเคย ผู้เขียนมักจะให้คำชี้แนะหรือคำสัญญาณ หรืออาจเป็นเครื่องหมายวรรคตอน ได้แก่

Definition type เป็นชนิดของสิงแนะที่ชี้แสดงความหมายหรือนิยามคำศัพท์ที่ไม่คุ้นเคย ซึ่งผู้อ่านสามารถสังเกตการนิยามความหมายของคำศัพท์ได้โดยการดูที่ตัวชี้แนะ หรือคำสัญญาณ (clues signal words) ที่ปรากฏอยู่ในข้อความนั้นๆ ตัวชี้แนะหรือคำสัญญาณ ได้แก่

เป็นชนิดของสิ่งแนะประเภทชี้แสดงถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสาเหตุ (cause) และ ผลลัพธ์ (result) จากสาเหตุนั้นๆ ในการค้นหาความหมายของคำศัพท์ที่ไม่คุ้นเคยจากข้อความที่แสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสาเหตุและผลลัพทธ์นั้นมีข้อควรจดจำ คือ ถ้าหากคำศัพท์ที่ไม่คุ้นเคยปรากฏอยู่ในข้อความที่แสดงเหตุ ให้อาสัยการพิจารณาจากข้อความที่บอกผลลัพธ์ เป็นลู่ทางในการเดาความหมายศัพท์นั้น แต่ถ้าหากคำศัพท์ที่ไม่คุ้นเคยปรากฏอยู่ในข้อความที่แสดงผลลัพธ์ ให้ทำการพิจารณาจากข้อความที่บอกเหตุ เป็นลู่ทางในการเดาความหมายของคำศัพท์ตัวนั้น

ดังนั้น demolished ก็คือ ทำลาย (destroyed) ทั้งนี้เนื่องจากในข้อความที่เป็นผลลัพธ์บอกว่า มีการสร้างคอนโดมิเนียมขึ้นมา แสดงว่าในข้อความที่เป็นเหตุ คนงานจะต้อง demolished หรือทำลายบ้านเก่าๆ ก่อน
เรื่อง Explanation
Explanation type เป็นสิ่งแนะ ชนิดที่ให้คำอธิบาย (explanation) แก่ผู้อ่าน โดยปกติเมื่อผู้เขียนกล่าวถึง สิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่งที่เกิดขึ้น ก็มักจะให้คำอธิบายต่อว่าทำไมจึงเกิดขึ้นเช่นนั้น เพื่อเป็นการสนับสนุนข้อความนั้นๆโดยปกติในข้อความที่เป็นคำอธิบาย มักจะมีคำบ่งชี้การอธิบายปรากฏอยู่ด้วย สำหรับคำบ่งชี้ที่พบบ่อยๆ ได้แก่
this is ( so) beacuse ........... ที่เป็นดังนี้ก็เพราะว่า
the reason for this is that ....... เหตุผลสำหรับสิ่งนี้ก็คือ
the cause of this is that ........ สาเหตุของสิ่งนี้ก็คือ
